Plot summary

The relationship between Ed, a married astronomer and Amy, his lover, who spend their years apart, is based only on phone calls and texts. One day Amy begins noticing something strange in Ed's messages.

Per distacco il film peggiore di Giuseppe Tornatore; un concentrato di errori e tentativi mal riusciti. La love story è pessima, costruita in modo dozzinale e con una coppia di attori male assortita, specialmente per la poca abitudine e dimestichezza di Jeremy Irons in questo tipo di ruolo. Una volta scomparso l'attore maschile, si concentra l'attenzione sul personaggio della Kurylenko, totalmente problematico e con conflitti interiori imbarazzanti, poco funzionali e con una serie di comportamenti che sfiorano l'assurdo (in negativo). Per completare la frittata ci si mettono anche degli effetti grafici pessimi e una totale assenza di supporting cast; Olga viene lasciata da sola sulla barca che il suo personaggio sta facendo affondare.

Although the cinematic suggestions Tornatore indulges in are not as effective as they turned out in previous works, the high-quality screenplay balances out all the odd directorial choices. The Correspondence is too well-written not to be worth a watch.

I don't understand why so many people think

I don't understand why so many people think that this is a bad film. Yes, it's got some flaws, but the plot in general is something new than the usual love story. This couple, that many people would think is wrong (for the age difference), is about to face the strongest and the most difficult obstacle that could ever happen to their relationship; and even if sometimes it looks unrealistic and even creepy, that doesn't make it a bad film. Both actors do a great job and Tornatore (accompained by Morricone's soundtrack) gives the film a tone of melancholy and nostalgia that focuses more on the "AFTER" than to the "BEFORE" of their relationship. And THAT has to be praised.
