Whether or not it is a classic of

Whether or not it is a classic of European cinema, it is well justified to address homosexuality in a sufficiently correct comic tone, which has been preserved quite well. A pleasant escape for a weekend.

La Cage aux Folles is a brilliantly funny

La Cage aux Folles is a brilliantly funny, charming, and endlessly entertaining French comedy. One of the first foreign films I ever saw, and somehow the original version feels less acted and more natural than its remake. Ugo Tognazzi and Michel Serrault are hilarious and magnetic as a gay couple navigating family chaos and conservative expectations. It’s a highly entertaining period piece that captures life in the ’70s. Almost 50 years old, yet the laughs feel just as fresh as a modern comedy. Witty, outrageous, and warm, it’s the original version of The Birdcage—maybe a bit sharper, more effortlessly funny, and utterly lovable. In French with English subtitles, it proves that great humor transcends time and language.
