The beginning of this film is confusing. Chef Cathy Marie walks past a bank of eight televisions, all broadcasting the same thing; an announcer telling us about a competition among chefs, all working inside the famous Chef Lyna Deleto's kitchen. We see the kitchen, full of many chefs, all working very fast. When Lyna approaches Cathy Marie, as she works on a dish of beets, and Lyna takes over the preparation, we are confused. Lyna tells Cathy Marie to dress the dish with Balsamic Vinagrette. Cathy Marie disagrees, and tells Lyna she always dresses it with Hybiscus, to which Lyna responds that Cathy Marie will do as Lyna tells her to. So, we conclude, that Cathy Marie is not part of the competition, and must be working for Lyna. Lyna would have a set menu, and Cathy Marie would already know how the dish should be prepared. Because, if Cathy Marie were competing with the other cooks in the already announced competition, it would be up to Cathy Marie to prepare this dish as she wished. Why would you hold a competition in a working kitchen, both preparing dishes for customers in a restaurant as the customers expect it to run, and also having contestants working on their interpretation of a separate meal at the same time? When Lyna Deleto calls Cathy Marie to her office, to scold Cathy Marie for disobeying Lyna's orders, Cathy Marie stands up for herself. Cathy Marie asks if the customers like the dish, to which the head staff responded that the customers did like the dish of beets. If Cathy Marie had been a Head Chef in Lyna's kitchen, Lyna would not ever dare to treat her Head Chef with such disrespect. Lyna further abuses Cathy Marie by demanding that Cathy Marie remove her earings. This is all too much for Cathy Marie, who quits her job on the spot. She tells Lyna that the customers come for Cathy Marie's cooking, and it is her reputation as Head Chef that keeps the restaurant open. I wonder, if Lyna had employed Cathy Marie as a head chef, and Cathy Marie had already served the dish of beets as she liked to prepare it, why would Lyna try to take over, and all in the middle of a competition, and serving regular menu to regular customers at the same time? Or was it that the competition was to see what the customers liked? If that were true, why did the director not show us the customers eating and commenting on the competition dishes? It's very confusing. Alternatively, it's possible the film was recorded live, and the script writers and directors invented the script as they went, not thinking very clearly about all the details, or continuity of the story. Really and for true, all the cast were doing was getting rid of Cathy Marie from Lyna's kitchen, so she could go on to the next part of the story, which was showing the audience the abject misery of illegal immigrants who are living in a Public Housing facility until they get their government papers to enter France as legal citizens. Cathy Marie takes the job working as cook in the public housing facility, where nobody appears to care about high quality meals. I won't give away any more of the film, because I want you to enjoy all the fun. I did enjoy the film, either way. I don't want to be too harsh with my critique of this film, because I think it was an important story to tell, and I think the cast did it well, despite some discrepancies. If my suspicions are correct, and they filmed it live, they did an even better job than this, because they invented it as they went, which means it was spectacular. They were not allowed the time to weed out the discrepancies and had to fly along by the seat of their pants. The rest of the film is magical. I enjoyed it despite the confusion.
