With Tatsuya Nakadai playing the leading role you can only be guaranteed a film worth your time to watch! I would say that he is neither 1st nor last in proficiency as a period actor, just that he is one of the top ones as is Akira Kurosawa's favourite Samurai/Ronin actor, Toshiro Mifune. I have not seen all the Japanese period films (????, Nihon eiga, also known domestically as ?? h?ga, "domestic cinema") made over their 100 year history but, I am pretty close. So I have seen a vast number of actors/actresses fighting with Nodashi, Kitana and Wakizashi swords.
