Plot summary

The story of two radically different men thrown together in a Latin American prison cell. One is Valentin, a journalist being tortured for his political beliefs. The other is Molina, a gay window-dresser who fills their lonely nights by spinning romantic fantasies drawn from memories of old movies.

A good sleep stimulant. A film that should have impacted me far more than it did. I ended up falling asleep watching it, not from physical exhaustion, but because the first hour feels painfully slow, distant, and emotionally uninvolving. Despite liking the concepts behind the characters and the "film within a film" structure, I never truly connected with what the movie was trying to convey. The second half improves things and finally offers moments that hold my attention, but by then I was already detached from the experience. Its political and romantic themes feel more theoretical than emotional, which becomes a major issue for a film so dependent on its discourse. The characters, especially those played by William Hurt and Raúl Juliá, come across more as symbolic ideas than fully human people. The performances are excellent, particularly Hurt’s, but the film’s themes and symbolism never affected me enough emotionally to leave a lasting impact.
