Killing Season tries to be a psychological thriller

Killing Season tries to be a psychological thriller but ends up as a shallow and unoriginal take on war trauma. Beyond its cliché-ridden script, the film’s biggest flaw is the dangerous moral equivalence it draws between the aggressor and the victim. John Travolta’s character, “Emil Kovač” (a former Serbian soldier), is portrayed with a degree of sympathy, while the actual victims of the Bosnian War are ignored. The film completely removes political and historical context, reducing genocide and war crimes to a personal duel between two men in the woods. This is not only narratively weak but morally irresponsible. If you’re looking for a film that truthfully and respectfully portrays the war in Bosnia – this is definitely not it. Instead, I highly recommend Quo Vadis, Aida? – a film with both soul and truth.
