I don't know why they made this movie

I don't know why they made this movie. The two original series had depth and nuance, of which this movie has absolutely none. The characters had well developed thoughts about the wars they were in. In this movie those same characters are reduced to jokes and caricatures of themselves, inconsistent with their representations in the previous series. The plot also feels rushed and messy. The combat is the best part but I don't think it equals what was in the series. It seems like a lot of the movie is based around fan service, which is odd to me when the series came out around 20 years ago, and again it is totally inconsistent with the previous shows. Sad to see such a good series end up like this. Would have been nicer to have a fully fleshed out (and thought out) series, or nothing, than this.
