Plot summary

Chantel Mitchell, a hip, articulate, black high-school girl in Brooklyn, is determined not to become "just another girl on the IRT" (the IRT is one of NYC's subway lines). She dreams of medical school, a family, and an escape from the generational poverty and street-corner life her friends seem to have accepted as their lot. But personal and sexual challenges confront Chantel on her way to fulfilling these dreams.

_Just Another Girl on the IRT_ has a scrappy, energetic charm that makes it hard not to root for. Ariyan Johnson is magnetic as Chantel, a motor-mouthed Brooklyn teen with big dreams and zero filter, owning every scene with breezy confidence. Her cheeky fourth-wall asides land effortlessly; however, when things take a sharper turn, and her world is thrown off-kilter, the rawness of the performances suddenly feels more fragile. Still, there’s a gutsy honesty throughout—a fierce, funny, and quietly radical take on Black girlhood and ambition, balancing humour and rawness to keep you entertained and emotionally connected.

Earnest and heartfelt debut

This film has heart that overshadows many of its faults. There is a lot of overacting in this film, but a lot of substance in it as well. I remember the love scene being very, very well done and very tasteful, one of the best I think I've ever seen. The song in the background fit the scene perfectly, it wasn't any "bump and grind" type of track. Kudos to Leslie Harris for making a moving as much as imperfect film.
