Plot summary

I loved the original music, costumes, and sets

I loved the original music, costumes, and sets. Considering the small budget, the production was well done. The casting was strong overall and the music is enchanting.

It starts badly. I am a Shakespeare scholar

It starts badly. I am a Shakespeare scholar. But, once you get past the first cornball High School Musical song, if you choose to stick with it as I did, it actually develops into an interesting, original and mildly entertaining twist on Romeo & Juliet. "A plague on both your houses," - Mercutio The only Shakespearean line in the whole film. But well positioned.

The biggest problem with this movie is (1)

The biggest problem with this movie is (1) lack of chemistry between the actors, (2) the dialogue souding awful, (3) the songs are boring and so generic that i can't remember even one, (4) the feeling that this movie thinks it's better then the source material (for example romeo and juliet meeting one/two days earlier feels like the way of saying "this is so much more realistic, no one falls in love in 5 days"), (5) the lack of understanding of the characters of the play - juliet being controled by her family, romeo being frankly depressed at the beginning, or, maybe the most annoying - mercutio in the play is NOT a montague. that matters a lot for the messege or even the plot of the play (romeo is not killed because prince feels sympathy for him BECAUSE MERCUTIO IS THE PRINCE'S COUSIN). i just hate this. i would say though, watching it with friends and making fun of the awful acting, costumes and songs was very fun.
