Plot summary

Annie is stuck in a long-term relationship with Duncan – an obsessive fan of obscure rocker Tucker Crowe. When the acoustic demo of Tucker's hit record from 25 years ago surfaces, its discovery leads to a life-changing encounter with the elusive rocker himself.

A quirky movie about human relationships and various

A quirky movie about human relationships and various obsessions. It very successfully avoids easy solutions and cheap happy endings. Even minor characters, like the heroine’s sister, are well fleshed out. Juliet, the English protagonist is in a long term relationship with a guy who idolizes a minor American rock musician. The long term is cut short when the guy meets a younger woman at work. Juliet on the other hand, almost by accident gets to know her ex’s idol. He is a good hearted middle aged unemployed guy, who has fathered many children with various partners and raised none, with the exception of the most recent. His current address is the garage of an ex wife. As they interact some of the characters become more mature, while the obsessed ex remains childish. There is a strong selection of songs, many interpreted by Ethan Hawke. On Prime.

What an amazing story, everyone played their parts incredibly, and the whole film was so enjoyable to watch

Rose Byrne and Ethan Hawke, Chris O'Dowd combine

Rose Byrne and Ethan Hawke, Chris O'Dowd combine in this quaint romcom with a dramatic heart. I only had one problem with this film: in the very good scene where Ethan is in hospital and he has exes and kids going off at him… the bedside monitor stays at 117/72 even though he is clearly agitated. That’s dumb directing. The set design and locations are so believable, I enjoyed the houses, the crockery, the knickknacks. The story and plot tick along easily enough although Hawke sending O’Dowd an unreleased album when he thinks he and his cadre are morons, is a weird self-own. Oh, and Hawke is invisible… yet he lives in a community using his real name… in 2018… Not believable. The theme I took away from this film is living in a failed past, betrayal, regret, forgiveness, new roads. I have watched this twice now. Rewatch? Maybe, maybe.
