Plot summary

Johnny Suede (Brad Pitt) longs to be a teen-age idol like Ricky Nelson. He has a pair of black suede shoes, an impressive pompadour, a guitar, and some pals who will play backup for him. Yet he doesn't have much talent or drive.

Like most movies we like or even love

Like most movies we like or even love, we have to have some kind of connection with one of the characters, whether it's through personal experience or what we want to be (a superhero, villian, etc.) even if its in our own heads or if it actually did happen in our lives. I love this movie. Yea, it's got tremendous faults, but it does give some insight on the mind of someone who truly has delusions of grandure, then it's a good moive. It's like Uncle Rico saying "I bet I can throw this football across those mountains." But then, there's that side of the main character, Johnny Suede, who senses that perhaps giving into a good solid relationship and growing up a bit, might work. Of course, like many of us, we sabatoge what is good for what we think is better. This is definitely not for the majority of mainstream audiences, but this is one of those tiny little sleeper movies you need to watch on a rainy day when you've got nothing better to do, sipping on some tea or something comforting. Perhaps a "depression" movie.

The film is essentially a tragi-comic meandering through the murky swamps of the male psyche. One of the reasons I was so excited to work with Brad was that I wanted Johnny to be someone who looked like he had it all together; like the world was his for the taking. But, beneath this facade was a guy who didn't have a clue about anything--particularly himself. Brad completely commited himself to this idea; he let himself be as blind, childish, arrogant and foolish as the role required.

This movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, while taking itself far too seriously. Just as the main character spends his life trying to be more than he is without ever really acknowledging that it’s all just a fantasy
