An enjoyable old classic. The film that shot

An enjoyable old classic. The film that shot Jane Wyman to fame and convinced her she was ready to leave her failing actor husband. Quite how she got an Oscar for a performance with literally zero noise made is beyond me. Whatever happened to her ex husband god only knows. The film had potential to be longer and potentially with a gripping court case. Instead it was wrapped up far too rapidly and ended disappointingly after a good first hour and a half.

This is a film that strives to reach

This is a film that strives to reach out and get people of the 1940s to understand the lives of deaf people. In that feat, I think it succeeds. It is certainly incorrect about a few things, mainly things that would not have been widely known at the time, but it succeeds nonetheless in the merits. As a story about a young deaf girl who is treated like an invalid by the rest of the inhabitants of her small Canadian town, including her father and aunt. Jane Wyman is excellent in the role of Belinda and gives a wonderful performance in what could have been a role that lesser actors would have hammed up.
