I watched this a while ago when Flixster

I watched this a while ago when Flixster hadn't added it yet, and it's a decent slasher, but nothing that'll stick with you. This is a humble beginning for Kiyoshi Kurosawa, an auteur of distinct style who continues to go utterly undernoticed. There's probably no real value in this except for fans of his.

One of Kiyoshi Kurasawa's early works made as a tribute to the 80's American slasher movies though the killer here bludgeons his victims with a pipe rather than using a knife. It has it's moments but overall it's distinctly average and slightly boring.

The Guard From Underground" is a rather lethargic

"The Guard From Underground" is a rather lethargic horror thriller in Kiyoshi Kurosawa's early filmography. Still, it showcases a lot of his style, which is characteristic of his later work, including the wide, cold feeling of emptiness on screen & the slow, atmospheric buildup. It has the nostalgia of an eighties slasher from the score & the imposing figure of the murderous obsessed lunatic stalking the corridors. A hulking antagonist who is as memorable as the best, largely hidden away in the background shadows with a disturbing brutal force of violence.
