Plot summary

Set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, this documentary mixes images of water and the town with performers and audience. The film progresses from day to night and from improvisational music to Gospel. It's a concert film that suggests peace and leisure, jazz at a particular time and place.

This film has been recommended all my life

This film has been recommended all my life as an indispensabke documentary of the mother of all jazz festivals--the Newport Jazz Festival-. It's frequently called the best film about jazz! That sort of over-praise is scarcely warranted. On the minus side: 1. the makers could not get a release to include the Miles Davis Sextet, which would have been a singular example of arguably Miles greatest group--with Coltrane, Cannonball, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones; 2. the more significant Newport Festival (by a long shot) was the one two years earlier, in 1956, when Duke Ellington proved to jazz fans in the U.S., Europe and Russia that he could still swing as the 30-chorus solo by tenorman Paul Gonsalves, which went til well past midnight, sent the crowd into a frenzy, a revelry anticipating Woodstock by 12 years. Jazz fans have a right to wish that the '56 Festival, which produced Ellington's most popular album, were the one documented on film--the festival that established the outdoor format as the primary venue for jazz and music festivals thereafter. On the plus side, 1. the film who the work of Bert Stern, best known for his nude photos of Marilyn Monroe for Esquire Magazine. His camera captures some memorable imagery, esp. during the set by Anita O'Day.. 2. the variety of jazz styles is reasonably representative, from bebopper Sonny Stitt the Jimmy Giuffre Trio to Gospel Queen Mahalia Jackson, whose wish is granted as she sings "Didn't It Rain?"

Ive heard raves about this for years, but

Ive heard raves about this for years, but its even better than I hoped. Outstanding music, with an interesting way of following a few members of the audience as they react to a particular number, and it also sets the event within the town and shoreline. Biggest revelation to me: Anita ODay, flirting, playful, gorgeous and generally amazing. And everyone from Mahalia Jackson to Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong to Thelonius Monk. A true classic,
