**The Introduction:**
Commercial star driven vehicles are always hyped at its time of release, and we see it. There are some films we like and it does not change even on subsequent revisits or rewatches. There are some films we like it for the first time but feels ordinary in subsequent revisits or rewatches. Then there are some films we don’t like it when we watch it for first time, but later while revisiting it, we end up liking it. Jailer falls in this third category.
I had not liked it when I watched in 2023, the time when it was released. But when Jailer 2 is releasing, I had to revisit this film, and I liked it.
**The Plot:**
In Arakkonam, police discover a temple priest murdered and the temple idol has been stolen and replaced with a fake one.
"Tiger" Muthuvel Pandian lives in Tamil Nadu with his family. Muthuvel's son, ACP Arjun, is investigating Varman, an eccentric gangster based in Arakkonam, who smuggles idols of gods and sells them to overseas buyers. Arjun confronts Varman's henchman, Seenu, and demands to know Varman's whereabouts. While getting close to nabbing Varman, Arjun suddenly goes missing, and the police department covers this up by spreading word that he may have committed suicide due to the stress of the job.
Grieving the apparent loss of his son and partly blaming himself for raising him to be honest and fearless, Muthuvel goes after Seenu and murders him, disposing of the body by coercing a clueless local taxi driver, Vimal, into helping him. In retaliation, Varman's men attempt to kill Muthuvel's grandson, Rithvik, but Muthuvel saves him. Muthuvel tries to convince Varman to leave him and his family alone. However, Varman does not listen to him. Enraged, he decides to fight back.
First, Muthuvel blackmails a psychiatrist, S. Dhandapani, into providing asylum for his family. He then visits Narasimha, a reformed criminal living in Mandya, who loans him four sharpshooters. With the help of Narasimha's men, Muthuvel steals Varman's idols that were being smuggled and uses them to blackmail and humiliate Varman, who is about to kill his family. Varman retaliates by killing three of his men responsible for their neglection which led to the idols stolen by Muthuvel, and hires a [Bihari](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biharis) gangster named Kamdev to send people to kill Muthuvel and his family at his home. Still, Muthuvel and Narasimha's men finish them, with his family watching in fear. On discovering Varman's target to be Muthuvel, Kamdev reveals to him that Muthuvel was previously the ruthless and charismatic jailer of Tihar prison who disciplined criminals harshly but also helped them reform, thus gaining a massive network of allies, including Kamdev.
Muthuvel corners Varman in his base along with a hundred men sent by another former criminal, Sikandar Singh, but Varman reveals that Arjun is still alive and threatens to kill him. Both of them ultimately compromise: Varman will release Arjun in exchange for retrieving a famous antique crown currently secured in a temple in Mangalagiri. With a lot of thoughts, Muthuvel agrees to bring the crown, with Varman enforcing a condition that two of his men will be sent as spies with him 24/7 to [Hyderabad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyderabad), to which he agrees. Muthuvel plans a heist involving the actor Blast Mohan, a temple trustee, at a temple where they keep the crown. After various deceptions and with the help of a smuggler in Mumbai named Mathew, Muthuvel eventually comes into possession of the crown and sends it to Varman through Varman's men sent for the heist.
Varman frees Arjun, who reveals himself as a corrupt police officer wanting to be cut in on Varman's operations, willing to kill his father for money. However, the crown is fake and conceals a hidden camera, through which Muthuvel sees their entire conversation. Varman discovers that the crown is fake. Feeling enraged and betrayed, he kills his two men sent along with Muthuvel for the heist and attempts to kill Arjun, but Arjun manages to fight back and Muthuvel attacks Varman's hideout with Kamdev, Vimal, and his allies, slaughters Varman's men and kills Varman, while Narasimha protects Muthuvel's family and Mathew destroys Varman's smuggling operations. Later, Muthuvel asks Arjun to surrender, but Arjun refuses and attempts to kill him. At Muthuvel's signal, Narasimha's men shoot and kill Arjun while Muthuvel solemnly walks away, throwing away his chain containing Arjun's childhood tooth that he kept as a memento.
**Main Review/Analysis:**
Jailer is fundamentally about Muthuvel Pandian rather than simply about a retired jailer confronting an idol-smuggling syndicate.
The story contains three major conflicts:
i). Personal conflict: Muthuvel's responsibility as a father and his guilt over raising Arjun to be honest and fearless.
ii). Personal conflict: Muthuvel's responsibility as a father and his guilt over raising Arjun to be honest and fearless.
iii). Moral conflict: Muthuvel discovering his son's corruption and ultimately choosing to have him killed.
These conflicts converge in the climax, where the man who initially sets out to avenge his son must confront the reality that his son has become morally compromised. It completes a tragic transformation of Muthuvel's objective: from protecting his son to accepting that his son has betrayed the principles he represents. The story has substantial potential because its emotional foundation is rooted in a father-son relationship rather than merely in the elimination of a villain.
I have few important criticism to make about the screenplay, which can be divided into three important areas.
A). The incomplete jailer flashback
There is a meaningful gap in Muthuvel’s characterization The narrative establishes two contrasting personalities: the ruthless, feared jailer of Tihar prison and the seemingly gentle, domesticated grandfather. However, it does not sufficiently explore the circumstances that produced this transformation.
There should have been a much lengthier flashback explaining why Muthuvel withdrew from his intimidating professional identity and embraced a quieter family life. The contrast itself is interesting, but the transition remains underdeveloped.
B). The Blast Mohan subplot
Blast Mohan distracts from the central narrative is particularly relevant because until then the film was character-driven story that was centered on Muthuvel Pandian.
The screenplay introduces an elaborate scheme involving Blast Mohan, the temple crown and multiple deceptions. Although this subplot serves the immediate objective of obtaining the crown, it occupies narrative space that could have been devoted to Muthuvel's personal history, his relationship with Arjun or his conflict with Varman.
Yes the humor feels highly unnecessary there but my main criticism is that the screenplay prioritizes an extended diversion over developing its central character.
C). Cause-and-effect progression
The opening establishes a clear progression:
Arjun investigates Varman → Arjun disappears → Muthuvel retaliates → Varman targets the family → Muthuvel resurrects his former identity.
This is coherent and strongly motivated.
The screenplay becomes less concentrated when the crown-heist narrative takes over. Although the heist has a causal purpose, its elaborate execution changes the narrative emphasis. That distinction is important: the screenplay is not necessarily devoid of cause and effect, but its central character development is incomplete.
Rajinikanth’s screen presence helps establish Muthuvel's authority, particularly when the character abandons his quiet domestic personality. Another interesting aspect is Rajinikanth bringing some of his trademark styles from his 80s and 90s films. Narasimha’s characterization as a former criminal who retains profound respect for Muthuvel and helps him provides an effective demonstration of the protagonist's past influence, and Shivarajkumar who is an excellent actor in my opinion leaves quite an impression.
Mathew similarly reinforces Muthuvel's network of powerful associates, and he performs solidly well.
Vinayakan as Varman is solid, and rest of the cast complement Rajinikanth’s performance. Nelson has a strong central character, an intimidating antagonist, a father-son relationship and a morally consequential climax. Yet, the direction fails to maintain consistent focus on these strengths.
The film's emphasis on Blast Mohan, the elaborate crown-heist sequence and the individual elevation of guest stars creates a tension between two storytelling approaches:
i). Character-driven story demands that narrative developments deepen our understanding of Muthuvel Pandian.
ii). Star-driven story prioritizes memorable entrances, heroic moments, and stylistic elevation
Structurally these approaches can coexist. But Jailer does not balance them effectively. An expanded jailer flashback, a more developed relationship between Muthuvel and Arjun, and no heist could have strengthened the emotional continuity of the film.
The background score by Anirudh is horrible for me. The Hukum song is primarily intended to celebrate Rajinikanth's star image, which makes the star-driven writing more obvious. As far as the dialogues are concerned, they succeed within the conventions of mass-oriented commercial cinema.
The climax deserves particular attention because it resolves the film's most significant emotional contradiction.Muthuvel initially believes his son has been killed because he pursued justice. Eventually, he discovers that Arjun himself is corrupt.
This revelation reverses the foundation of Muthuvel's entire mission. His final decision to have Arjun killed demonstrates that his commitment to his principles ultimately supersedes his paternal attachment. The childhood tooth preserved in his chain is an important visual symbol. By discarding it, Muthuvel symbolically relinquishes the emotional attachment that has defined his actions throughout the narrative. The ending therefore connects the personal, moral and external conflicts in a way that the crown-heist subplot does not.
**Conclusion:**
Jailer has a strong story but the film does not realize the story’s potential. Jailer could have become a great character-driven story centered on Muthuvel Pandian if Nelson had devoted greater attention to his past, his transformation and his relationship with Arjun instead of expanding the Blast Mohan subplot.
Rajinikanth, Shivarajkumar, Mohanlal have delivered solid performances.
