"Traffic" is movie pleasure for those who say "they don’t make them like they used to" as it is pure storytelling without violence, car chases or special effects overload. The message is perfectly delivered and needs to be seen by anyone who appreciates good cinema.

A fine piece of film-making

Traffic is a social drama with a plethora of storylines, laced with elements of black comedy, satire, persiflage, and stereotyping. It might sound like a recipe for disaster, yet it all harmoniously blends together. Surprisingly, this complexity enhances the film's naturalism - after all, isn't life itself disjointed?The cast is outstanding, with a particularly stellar performance by Anamaria Vartolomei. Even though the film isn't centered on inner conflict, a minute-long close-up of Natalia near the end quietly reveals how deeply we're shaped by our predicament.Keep your eyes wide open: this film doesn't offer answers to the social issues it raises, but it makes you feel and understand them on a deeply profound level.

the film is well worth watching, and I'm glad I did

Over the past 20 years, we have had the pleasure of watching numerous films featured at the Romanian Film Festival in London. Many of these were remarkable works of art, films rooted in strong scripts, skillfully directed, and featuring standout performances.However, in recent years, we've found ourselves increasingly disappointed by some of the offerings. Many felt formulaic, crafted more for the festival circuit than for genuine storytelling-films like The Whistlers (or Gomera) come to mind, with their incoherent narratives built around a single "poetic" idea.So, I was a bit apprehensive when I watched the first part of Traffic and its depiction of seasonal workers staging a semi-revolt against their employers. It felt like a propaganda film for Corbyn's party festival.Fortunately, after a less credible scene at an orgy club party (is the high Dutch class so depraved?), the story wriggled itself from clichés. The film broke free from clichés. The script found its rhythm, and the performances from the key actors lifted the story, which grew tense and engaging. I found myself captivated by the multilayered narrative, one that can be analysed from several perspectives.While the film is a dramatisation of a real art heist carried out by impoverished, uneducated Romanians, the story is universal; the world is full of ignorant individuals, whether very wealthy or very poor.Anamaria Vartolomei, Ionut Niculae, and Rares Andrici all delivered superb, realistic performances, with some secondary roles standing out as well. The actress who played Ginel's mother, in particular, impressed me so much that I wondered if she was a professional. My guess is she wasn't, and for that, she deserves applause.That said, not every aspect was flawless. For instance, I found the portrayal of Thomas Ryckewaert, the Dutch art manager, and the Romanian prosecutors to be somewhat caricatured. Despite this, the film is well worth watching, and I'm glad I did.
