Still a good coming-of-age film

The story of a biy who, in the early 1980s, moves from the countryside to a high-rise housing estate in East Berlin, the capital of the GDR. Set against the oppressive backdrop of socialist-era apartment blocks, the film explores first friendships, first love, conflicts with his parents, and his struggles with a physically superior bully. Compared to today's viewing habits, the film unfolds slowly and almost cautiously. The sense of threat posed by elevator shafts and elevators as spaces of fear is beautifully portrayed. It's almost incomprehensible that this film, seemingly harmless and innocent from today's perspective, became the focus of intense political debate and had to be rewritten several times under state pressure. How fragile must the GDR regime have been to react so vehemently to even the slightest criticism of the conditions in the country? Overall, well worth watching.
