Netflix has made some really fun movies, and In Your Dreams is definitely one of them. It has a surprisingly complex story, as well as some colorful visuals, a charming cast, and a fast pace that perfectly benefits the movie and its concept. My only criticisms with it are the ending, which felt like a copout, and the fact that this movie was NOT a musical (that's more of a nitpick rather than a direct criticism). Still a lot of fun, though.

In In Your Dreams, the film quickly proves itself far more ambitious and emotionally layered than its marketing suggests. What begins as what appears to be a light, slightly quirky animated adventure transforms into an unexpectedly heavy exploration of a family in crisis, filtered through the eyes of a young girl who desperately wishes to keep her parents together. Her wish pulls her into a dream world that doesn't truly exist-an imaginative but haunting manifestation of her fear of losing the people she loves most. The way the movie merges fantasy with the rawness of divorce is what gives it its surprising power. The emotional current running through this film is unmistakable. While its early moments feel playful and creative, the tone slowly deepens, revealing a story that's far more concerned with heartbreak than humor. It's almost startling how sad certain sections become, especially considering that many viewers will go in expecting a family-friendly romp. The filmmakers don't shy away from showing the confusion, loneliness, and hope that children cling to when their world suddenly shatters, making it a film that resonates more with adults than kids at several points.Even with the heavy themes, the creativity is undeniable. The dreamscape is imaginative, colorful, and narrative-rich, filled with characters that serve both comedic and symbolic purposes. This balance keeps the story from collapsing into pure melancholy. Instead, it becomes a meaningful blend of whimsy and sorrow, reflecting the emotional chaos children navigate during family turmoil. The thoughtful world-building elevates what could've been a predictable separation story into something strikingly memorable. And of course, Baloney Tony steals the show. As the little boy's beloved stuffed toy, he becomes not just comic relief but an unexpectedly endearing anchor within the emotional swirl. Every scene he appears in is funnier and more charming than the last, and his presence lightens the film at crucial moments. It's characters like him-quirky, heartfelt, and sharply written-that help the movie maintain balance. He's the kind of animated character audiences remember long after the credits roll. What's also striking is how confidently the film is produced. Animation, direction, and storytelling all feel assured, even when shifting tones. Many people will likely approach it with skepticism-expecting something small or simplistic-only to find themselves unexpectedly moved. The film demonstrates that animated stories can still dive deeply into human pain without losing accessibility or warmth. It's a testament to the filmmakers' willingness to take risks in a genre often hesitant to explore real-world emotional wounds.Given the current awards race, where K-Pop Demon Hunter holds a strong lead, In Your Dreams may not be the obvious front-runner. But it absolutely deserves a nomination. And when Zootopia 2 enters the conversation, the category may become even tighter. Still, there's no denying that this film stands out for its emotional ambition, its creative boldness, and its willingness to treat its young characters-and its audience-with honesty. It's beautifully crafted, deeply felt, and one of the more surprising animated films of the year.

An Enchanting Fantasy That Doesn't Allow Itself to Go Further

Netflix's new animated film, In Your Dreams, arrives in the catalog surrounded by expectations. Not only because it shares the same release year with another possible contender from the studio, K-Pop Warriors, but also because it marks Alex Woo's directorial debut. Although it is his first feature film as a director, Woo brings with him a background that arouses curiosity: years working as a story artist at Pixar on films such as Ratatouille, WALL-E, Finding Dory, The Incredibles 2, and The Good Dinosaur. Add to that the fact that the production is signed by Kuku Studios, founded by former Pixar employees, and it's clear why the film already has a familiar feel to it.And that familiarity is both a strength and a weakness. Woo has stated that he sought direct inspiration from his years of experience at Pixar, and the film does carry much of the studio's emotional, visual, and narrative identity. However, while this influence brings security, it also leaves In Your Dreams stuck in the shadow of the works it honors. The result is a competent and sensitive film that struggles to find its voice. In Your Dreams is a film that entertains, moves you at times, and demonstrates the potential of a studio that is still finding its artistic maturity. But it is also a work that limits itself. The structure is familiar, the fantasy could be bolder, and the family drama could go deeper. The final impression is that of a film that has heart and good ideas, but avoids taking risks, always staying too safe to reach the emotional and narrative climax it seemed headed for.Even so, it should be a strong contender for an Oscar. Not necessarily because it is one of the most memorable animations of the year, but because Netflix has historically been a strong contender in this category during awards season. In Your Dreams is derivative, but also promising. Imperfect, but engaging. A firm step forward for the studio that produced it and a reminder that sometimes, even in dreams, growing up hurts a little.
