There’s not a lot of summer during the runtime of In the Good Old Summertime. In fact, a good chunk of it is set during Christmas. But that doesn’t seem to be the point of this movie. The point seems to be getting Judy Garland to sing as many full-length musical numbers as possible. I think I counted six, including one scene where she sings two in a row. Still, it’s a cute movie, and Ms. Garland definitely gets to show off her vocal talents. If you’ve seen The Shop Around the Corner or You’ve Got Mail, then you already know the plot of In the Good Old Summertime, but that’s okay, because it’s likeable.

Garland gets a few fantastic numbers that make it watchable but mostly this movie saps the charm, wit, and most importantly the stakes out of "The Shop Around the Corner".

Although it's not as good as the original

Although it's not as good as the original Shop Around the Corner, it still has some quality and lasting moments. Great cast. Beautiful mise en scene. Some decent music and signing, but some songs were forgettable. I wish Buster would've got a bigger role. Saw it on TCM.
