Plot summary

A concentration camp survivor discovers her former torturer and lover working as a porter at a hotel in postwar Vienna. When the couple attempt to re-create their sadomasochistic relationship, his former SS comrades begin to stalk them.

An intriguing premise-a couple who had some kind

An intriguing premise-a couple who had some kind of a relationship in a concentration camp meet up after the war and resume/replay their roles from wartime-is tantalizingly acted out in this intense, decadent, thoughtful film which deals with some staticky controversial ideas.

Hard to watch, but undeniably intriguing The Night Porter (1974) *** A product of the 1970s’ era of boundary-pushing cinema, The Night Porter is a disturbing, often exploitative exploration of trauma, abuse, and obsession, stylishly directed by Liliana Cavani and powerfully performed by Dirk Bogarde and especially Charlotte Rampling. While its artistry and haunting imagery are undeniable, the film’s lingering fascination with humiliation makes it deeply problematic, yet still fascinating and difficult to forget if you can endure it.
