Plot summary

Joey Wellman, an American cartoonist from Cleveland now largely forgotten at home, visits France with his partner Lena to attend an exhibition in Paris about the comic strip (bande dessinée) which features his work. He also hopes to be reconciled with his daughter Elsie who has been a student in Paris for two years, in flight from the American culture of which she sees her father as a typical example. Elsie is naively infatuated with French literature, and is trying to secure an introduction to the brilliant university professor Christian Gauthier, an expert on Flaubert but also an enthusiast for comic books. The meeting of father and daughter goes badly, but Elsie is persuaded to join Joey and Lena for the weekend at the country house of Gauthier's mother, Isabelle. During a comic-themed masquerade party, all of the characters are made to reconsider their present and past relationships.

There is a decent film buried in here

There is a decent film buried in here, but I think it is sabotaged by some poor performances and in the end it falls into the trap of an ending that is in complete contradiction to the American sentimentality and self-absorption it professes to disavow.

What a mess. Resnais must have been drunk

What a mess. Resnais must have been drunk when he made this. A satire about American-French relations with a bizarre cast. Adolph Green gives one of the most obnoxious performances ever as an American cartoonist who goes to Paris to visit his estranged daughter. Depardieu can't speak proper English. The film culminates in a Rules of the Game-ish costume party. It ends up as pretty much a live action cartoon.

Dreadful

Adolph Green has, to put it mildly, never been much of an actor (remember when My Favorite Year stopped dead whenever he appeared?), but in this he doesn't act at all. He just yells and complains about everything in which Paris differs from Cleveland, as if saying that he doesn't like something and it's crazy is automatically hilarious.Gerard Depardieu does act--as if he doesn't want to acknowledge he is in the movie and hopes no one else will notice. The woman who plays Green's daughter is as incompetent with her accent as with her acting--after living in Paris for two years, she sounds like an American child sounding out French for the first time. But, oh, doesn't she think she's cute. One feels sorry for Linda Lavin, who is always nice, and who remains nice even amidst all this rubbish.
