This is the remake of the 1953 film

This is the remake of the 1953 film of the same name. It's changed to a modern setting of the early 80s at the time and is much more violent and sexier than the original. Mike Hammer is played this time around by Armand Assente. He fits nicely in the role. What took place in the original happens here as well with a few changes. Hammer's war buddy from Vietnam one-armed Jack (who is also a detective) gets shot by a mysterious assassin. Hammer's investigation to his friend's murder leads him to a sex clinic, Hollywood FX Studios, CIA bullies, mobsters and a serial rapist. All in a days work for the Hammer! This remake takes a LOT of liberties with it's source material. So much so that it almost out does the original. What I didn't like about the 1953 version was it's far fetched story cupped with bad acting. It's the same thing here except I am willing to forgive this version more. Reasons for this is because it's so much more trashier and adult than the original that it becomes fun and entertaining at times. Take the Orgy scene at the sex clinic Mike is investigating. It's a very disturbing scene with him in one room watching a bunch of people have sex while in another room the serial rapist is slicing and dicing twin sisters on a waterbed. It was very creepy and provided a more hard edged tone to the case Mike is trying to solve. Not to mention the infamous Japanese Grill scene that almost got me jumping out of my seat. Scenes like this come out of left field when you least expect it and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Of course the serial rapist subplot isn't exactly the case, but more of a distraction while leading Mike to the real killer. This is meant to be film noir-ish after all. Just like the original. If you've seen the original then you know who the killer will be, but if it's your first watching this version instead then I envy you. Because I wish I had seen this version first instead. I probably would've been more shocked by it and would've rated this movie a little bit more higher. In any case, this is a well done remake that might surprise you if you can get past it's cheesey first few minutes.

This can be a nasty, uncomfortably violent, masochistic

This can be a nasty, uncomfortably violent, masochistic Detective Thriller but it is entertaining. And Laurene Landon and Barbara Carrera are outstanding and very fun to watch. They are very sexy and gorgeous amidst the carnage.
