Every time cinema has a game-changer (in this case, 'Mad Max' and the entire genre of 'post-apocalyptic dystopia movies'), it's fascinating to watch how various countries and cultures react to the instant knowledge that 'something new is out there that can bring in for us a lot of money'. For this Italian effort, which needed very little in the way of budgeting for either actors, set design or costumes, it's not bad. Director Castellari brings to it an action-packed flow which never flags for a moment. (The 87-year-old Rome native--God bless him--is directing 'Keoma Rises' at the moment, his first film in six years, and it is slated to be released later this year.) I have previously only seen his spaghetti-western 'Keoma', which I adore. He throws in two instances of nice gratuitous sex in a heartened attempt at 'character and plot development', but I really don't have a problem with that, especially with great Italian beauties like he has at his disposal here. There's a bizarre homoerotic undertone, particularly to a scene in which Scorpion is being tortured, but it's not problematic. Fred Williamson is the only star I recognized, and he continues his credo of 'getting the girls and winning the fights', which he stands by in his movies. The electronic score is dated but not bad, though it's inferior to those of, say, either Tangerine Dream or Goblin. All in all, it was a 91-minute span of time I don't regret in the slightest--I even watched it with a plate of spaghetti and glass of red wine at hand to further exemplify the Italian experience.

THAT is what the man of the future will be wearing?!?!

I see from the reviews on this board that the film in question is dividing opinion hugely. On one hand many reviewers are describing this as one of, if not the worst movie ever made whilst others are touting it as an unintentional work of genius. For what it's worth, I would place the movie as somewhere in between the two extremes.Yes, the film is admittedly a low budget, low brow rip off of Mad Max……but…….taken for what it is, and if you approach it in the right frame of mind, it's actually a pretty decent, undemanding watch. In fact, I would even go as so far as to suggest that the film is actually one of the better post apocalyptic Mad Max inspired outings to spring out of Italy during the 1980's.That staple plot of a lone group of survivors terrorised by nomadic barbarians rears its' hoary old head yet again here. In this case, the villains are a group of self appointed purges of humanity calling themselves The Templar's who are headed by that Italian B-movie stalwart of villainous roles, BIG George Eastman who plays a character named (oddly) One.There is ostensibly some enmity between One and the hero in this, Scorpion, based on some undisclosed prior events. For his part, Scorpion seems content to drive around in his souped up car and periodically wipe out Templar raiding parties although predictably, Scorpion and One are bound to meet up at the films climax for one final battle.Although the budgetary constraints are overtly apparent in the films overall look, there are a number of commendable action and gore sequences littered throughout the running time including a humorous beheading scene and a number of bodies exploding in a particularly cool manner! And let us not forget, how can any film be entirely bad when the always awesome Fred 'The Hammer' Williamson is on board?! (Well with the exception of the atrocious Delta Force Commando of course!)May I finally just add a special mention to Anna Kanakis, the actress in this who Scorpion saves from a Templar assault……she is seriously HOT, HOT, HOT stuff! – Hell, watch the film to feast your eyes upon her if nothing else!

Another great Italian B-bomb!

Violence violence violence! I do love a good B movie filled with great humor (thanks, Fred Williamson), bad English dubbing, and some seriously senseless destruction of life, limb and personal property with no clearly explicated purpose.. it makes me wish that my local theater would pick up dubiously awful and forgettable garbage like this so I could at least feel like I got my seven bucks' worth and be sure I'm not contributing to some Hollywood millionaire's personal Scientology donation fund.

I have never seen so many people explode in my life. There is at least one exploding person in each scene. There are no less than three decapitations in the whole movie. One guy's body even twitched after he had his melon lobbed off by a chassis-mounted, multibladed personal decapitation device. Wow.. there were some kind of great special effects in this movie, too. Well, that is to say that plenty of money was spent on explosions, fake blood, improvised costumes and cars converted into wild, freewheeling killing machines.

Fred Williamson plays a very proud mercenary in post-nuclear holocaust Earth, and boy does he ever do it with STYLE! He even gets a girl by the end. This movie has one of the best (ahem, most laughable) science-fiction artsy sex scenes ever done - inside a green cellophane tube, the girl in a bodysuit and the man shamelessly naked, all the while cutting in and out to scenes of the actors sitting by a polluted lake, discussing how they understand their respective life circumstances. It's about as awkward and hilarious as one could get short of sex on the Starship Enterprise with Data. This would be a good movie to show if you are trying to illustrate a psychological or sociological point about the human relationship with aggression and violence, because there isn't really much of a plot without the violence. In fact, the ends of the plot lie in the destruction of one group of people, who believe that their life purpose is the destruction of all humanity, so there you go. Take a good look at the costumes - lots of cool hats, codpieces, stockings.. it only gets better as the flick rolls on. Enjoy.
