Here's a Bava flick I have a serious

Here's a Bava flick I have a serious soft spot for. It's essentially a western set in Viking times. Cameron Mitchell is the wandering gunman (knifeman in this film) who takes up with a woman in distress while seeking vengeance against those who wronged him. There's nothing particularly unusual about it outside of the Viking setting, but it's a really solid genre flick. It also has a really cool, long drawn-out fist fight.

Knives Of The Avenger is a Viking-based revenge

Knives Of The Avenger is a Viking-based revenge film that mixes vague supernatural overtones to lots of swordplay and knife-throwing. Aside from a bizarre reference to the protagonist's sexual assault upon the love interest, the script is about as basic as it gets. Much of the action takes place outdoors, so Mario Bava's signature blend of lighting and colors is at its minimum. This film isn't trying to win any awards or charm any pretentious film critics, but it's pretty unremarkable even by the standards of Italian exploitation cinema.

Knives of the Avenger (AKA I Coletelli del

Knives of the Avenger (AKA I Coletelli del Vendicatore, AKA Bladestorm, AKA Viking Massacre) is one of Mario Bava's lesser works and probably hasn't been seen by too many genre fans. Mario Bava was a director that liked to do a lot of different things. He did horror films and spy spoofs, but for this one, he did an action/period piece. To be honest, I found it to be mostly boring and uninteresting for the majority of its running time. It does feature a young Cameron Mitchell as the hero, but not the kind of Cameron Mitchell that I'm used to; the one that is a terrible but fun actor to watch. I'll certainly give the movie credit for its costume design and look of everything. It got that right, but it didn't really light a fire under me in any other way. Mario Bava aficionados may enjoy it the most, I suppose, but I personally didn't care all that much for it.
