Plot summary

100 Yen Love encapsulates a dual essence, oscillating between a negative, nihilistic atmosphere and a quirky, hopeful demeanour. The film serves as a metaphorical punch thrown by individuals struggling to find meaning in their existence against the canvas of life.

I read a few positive reviews of this film before sitting down for 2 hours to take it in. I wasn't convinced by Sakura Ando's pretend acting to be so weak at the beginning of the film. Then in the boxing scene at the film's close, after watching all the hard spent training to hone her into a strong focused athlete she gets into the ring and suddenly forgets all her training and gets pummeled. Even for a Japanese drama film this all just appeared too nonsensical. In the love hotel scene she suddenly can move a muscle, but a few scenes before she physically attacks her sister without reserve. The glaring inconsistencies were a turn off.

Big thumbs-down for the “man-loving big sis.” Brave

Big thumbs-down for the “man-loving big sis.” Brave enough to criticize her younger sister, but the moment a man shows up she turns into a submissive little “good wife, good girl.” Throughout the whole movie, Japanese characters are either portrayed as unsettling or overly eager to please. The daughter seems completely dependent on having a man in her life. Speechless. Turns out all the “changes” director Jia Ling made were just removing the unpleasant parts—go figure. This movie actually left me very frustrated. It’s nowhere near the level of Hot and Spicy and doesn’t deserve such a high rating. The plot is so incoherent I couldn’t connect emotionally. Falls for “Banana Man” out of nowhere, gets “inspired” out of nowhere. The sister voices a few mild complaints, does almost nothing else, yet he treats her more harshly than anyone. But when it comes to the guy? Suddenly she’s all gentle and accommodating. Where’s that temper now? Confident with the weak, hesitant with the strong? Compared to Hot and Spicy, this is disappointing. Is her life truly impossible without a man? The plot jumps from scene to scene without much connection. That middle-aged woman begging on the street—what was her backstory? Why was she struggling, what was her life like, why did she want to “win just once”? Everything feels random: suddenly she’s motivated, then just as suddenly she’s back to where she started. Please don’t underestimate female audiences with stories like this. Better to keep such narratives in formulaic male-oriented fiction.
