Plot summary

Archie has been in love with his best friend Amelia for as long as he can remember. Just when he builds up the courage to declare his feelings, she falls head over heels for Billy Walsh, a new American transfer student.

#MovieReview | How to Date Billy Walsh (2024) How to Date Billy Walsh is a sweet little romantic comedy that had the potential to be a charming watch. It stars Tanner Buchanan, Sebastian Croft, and newcomer Charithra Chandran, and while it seemed like a promising setup, the film ultimately didn’t deliver. For a movie with Billy Walsh in the title, it’s surprising how little Tanner Buchanan is actually in it. His limited screen time felt misleading and underwhelming, especially considering how much focus is placed on him in the promotion. The film leans heavily on awkward, overdone comedy and excessive narration that becomes more distracting than entertaining. Rather than enhancing the story, the constant narration felt unnecessary and, at times, ridiculous—pulling you out of the emotional beats the film was trying to hit. What’s even more frustrating is the way the story resolves. It sets up a dynamic where you expect Sebastian Croft’s character to finally have his heartfelt moment and find love. Instead, the story swerves unexpectedly: he helps Billy, a character who barely seems interested in the girl, end up with her. The romantic payoff feels rushed, unearned, and confusing. It’s as if the film lost its own plot halfway through. Despite a likable cast and some moments of genuine potential, How to Date Billy Walsh ultimately falls flat due to weak writing, underdeveloped relationships, and a story that never quite lands where it should.

I don't mind the stylized, almost music-video vibe

I don't mind the stylized, almost music-video vibe of the film, I think it's kind of fun and even appropriate for the subject matter (teen melodrama). What bugs me about this is that it gets *close* to real lessons or real stakes for the characters emotionally, but it backs off from direct consequences in a strange way. For example (spoilers) Millie flubs her first date with Billy by being a giant butt, and instead of apologizing for her bad behavior and maybe explaining that she took some bad advice because she was nervous, she... announces over the intercom that she pooped on the side of the road once and that her mom died. And that works, somehow. Similarly, Archie massively betrayed Millie by pretending to be the Love Doctor and instead of resolving that by talking it through with her directly, he... compares everyone in his class to stars and says he won't stand in her way again. And that also works. I know some people think this is satire but like, is this supposed to be part of the satire? Am I the one not getting it here? It feels like it would be a quick re-write to just have the characters actually acknowledge and learn from their mistakes instead of using public humiliation as some kind of sacrificial lamb-payment for those mistakes.
