Plot summary

Deep rooted religious beliefs seemingly going back to the Pilgrim Fathers' puritanism dominate a society which is entertained by violence to no end on a daily basis. If it is true that American movies reflect American society, the United States have yet another severe problem: a lack of open sexuality and eroticism.

Strictly for beginners...

Hollywood movies before the Hays Code (Motion Picture Production Code) of 1934 and after, circa 1968, when filmmakers were allowed the freedom to explore adult subject matter. Academic cable documentary with movie clips, interviews, and cute vintage bumpers from Clara Kuperberg and Julia Kuperberg is strictly for beginners. The selected movie scenes are too familiar, with the proverbial "Pillow Talk" bathtub scene used to illustrate Hollywood's nudging of morals in the late-'50s. Elsewhere, "The Graduate" introduces older woman/younger man seduction, "Midnight Cowboy" has prostitution (female and male), "Straw Dogs" and "Deliverance" show rape (female and male), and "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" has wife-swapping (almost!). A more recent sex scene from cable's "Sex and the City" catches its leading lady in the act yet still wearing a bra, which asks the question: How far has permissiveness really come? Perhaps those Reagan years of rolling back the clock on women's rights has regressed the US to the point of no recovery? (Filmmaker Adrian Lyne says European audiences loved his sexy "Nine 1/2 Weeks", particularly in France where it played for several years, but that an edited version still made Americans "uncomfortable".) Runtime of 56mns doesn't allow the documentary to expand on its theme, while the well-intentioned commentators cover well-trodden ground. *1/2 from ****

Fairly interesting

Fairly interesting from the perspective of a French man. Americans are so prude, yet so incredibly hypocritical in their practices, it's hard to make sense of it. JFK was such a philanderer, to such a pathological extent. His dad was such a terrible guy. His wife was such an opportunist. If that's not a power couple to celebrate for their cunning, but no, somehow you built a narrative that's pretty much the opposite of who they were?

The country played offuscated with the Monica Lewinsky affair, as if a president having extra marital affairs was a novelty. As if using power to get sex were new. Then fast forward you elect Trump who's so incredibly appalling in his behaviour. Then you look at the Biden family, how deviant can they reasonably get?

Half of your marriages end in divorce with how many of those marred by infidelity. And how about the other half? Maybe it's time to admit it?

It's just so incredibly hypocritical. Are there people actually buying into your puritan narrative? Were there ever? If you are, what does it say about you? Wake up? Grow up?

So the documentary wasn't bad, but it felt pathetic, for America really would gain from being more honest about itself. Just say the truth, you'll all feel better.
