It's shocking how invested in their national identity the Japanese are that they refuse to come to terms with their own past and deny it and obliterate the victims' claims and suffering at all costs. That they still haven't acknowledged it and refuse to, well they acknowledged it happened but it wasn't that bad and certainly they do not tell their own people, put it in the history books or apologize to the countries, if not the victims as such. Very filthy behaviour and inhuman honestly. The Japanese were awful in WWII, before and afterwards and they partially still are with their blatant xenophobia and most everyone knows it except for them.As for the movie, it is touching and I am glad there were no actual reenactments, only spoken accounts, and even those are heartbreaking and I actually recently saw this in an episode of the drama Tomorrow which was pretty graphic and explicit and frankly how can humans be capable of this I will never understand... I did feel that there is some unnecessary dramatization with some of the characters and Mrs. Moon's very loud boss lady friend bothered me in each scene. I don't know if people talked and behaved like that in the 90s or if this is just meant to bring some light comedy or what but it didn't really work for me. I don't know if these grannies' personalities are based on any real people, but most likely their stories are.I rated it high because I think the story comes through very well, and the actors made the characters come alive with all their quirks and foibles and the look and feel of the movie felt of that era in a way and my own preferences and dislikes for certain patterns of behaviour may be very far from how people actually are. And also I'm sure the cast is extra famous in Korea, I know some of these faces are very familiar to me, even if I cannot place them, I know I have seen Kim Hae-sook's face often enough and some of the others and probably a lot of the cultural references and peculiarities went completely over my head.
