Genre classic for this generation. Hits all the tropes and notes you'd expect, but elevated by the writing. First major work from Finn and Billy as writer/director/actor team and solidly puts them on the map as a team to keep an eye on. Characters are real, writing is tight, shot selection is efficient. Sound is a bit inconsistent, but I think it's because some folks strained their voices. Kills are impactful and mostly practical, but not gratuitous. Does not overstay its welcome and remains entertaining throughout. Not going to win any awards, but worth your time. I would put this on as easy viewing for any fans of the genre or as an introduction to any young moviewatcher to learn the cinematic language of horror.

Hell of a let down

As one of my most anticipated films of the year, it's genuinely disappointing to be let down by Hell of a Summer. While the movie does a solid job of paying homage to iconic camp slashers like Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, and The Burning, it ultimately doesn't offer much beyond the nostalgia factor. The humor feels relatively mild, and while that could be forgivable if the film leaned more heavily into its horror elements, it doesn't quite succeed in that regard either. Despite a few moments of tension, there's a striking lack of satisfying kills. In fact, out of the entire film, I counted only one on-screen death, which was a missed opportunity for a more engaging horror experience. That said, Hell of a Summer still has its bright spots. Finn Wolfhard stands out as the film's highlight-marking the first time I can say he's truly been my favorite part of a movie. Though his comedic timing isn't always perfect, his style of humor, which resembles comedian Daniel Avidan (aka Danny Sexbang of Ninja Sex Party and Game Grumps), works well. Wolfhard's dynamic both on and off-screen with Avidan is noticeable and adds an interesting layer to his performance. In the end, Hell of a Summer is a letdown, but it's not without its redeeming qualities. I've certainly seen worse movies, and I'm willing to give the two first-time directors a second chance, hoping they'll take what they've learned from this project to improve their future work.

i hate off screen deaths

It's not a slasher or horror movie, but it's not boring either. There were some funny moments, but that's about it. But it's definitely a great start for Finn as a filmmaker. It didn't give me what i wanted it to give me. I spend hall of the movie writing this review because i just wanted the movie to finish quicker. The story is a very simple one but it's about as generic as they come. I would skip this one. Don't call a movie SLASHER if you are not going to show the killing happening. It was a waste of my time. All together it was more of something for a streaming network rather than for the theaters.
