Plot summary

After their young son, Colton, undergoes emergency surgery, small-town parents Todd and Sonja Burpo are overjoyed at the child's miraculous recovery. However, the Burpos are unprepared for what happens next... Colton says that during his surgery he went to heaven and back, and tells his parents things that he couldn't possibly know. Can Todd find the courage and conviction to share his son's extraordinary, life-changing experience with the world?

I just finished Heaven Is for Real, and

I just finished Heaven Is for Real, and overall, it was an inspiring watch — one that definitely stirs up thoughts on the afterlife, which is already right up my alley. The film follows the true story of a pastor’s young son who claims to have visited Heaven during a near-death experience, despite never actually flatlining. His account sparks debate, hope, and reflection within his community, mirroring many other stories shared by people who’ve brushed up against death. The movie leans heavily into faith-driven emotion and carries a feel-good, heartfelt tone. While the story itself is powerful and sincere, the film’s pacing is slow — roughly 90% dialogue in a 90-minute run time. There are a few suspenseful moments, but it’s not particularly gripping as a movie. Personally, I’ve read books packed with hundreds of near-death and Heaven experiences that left me with the same sense of wonder in far less time. In the end, it’s meaningful, thoughtful, and uplifting — especially if you're fascinated by afterlife accounts — but it may play better as a message than a cinematic experience. Worth watching for the inspiration, not necessarily for the excitement.

With solid performances and a script that desperately

With solid performances and a script that desperately tries to connect with everyday faith, the film fails to maintain a Christian sentimentality through the child's experience and a pastor's anxieties about faith. Trying to approach a pastor's life from an everyday perspective feels forced; it simply doesn't work. I should sympathize with the family, but it's just like invading my neighbor's privacy. The premise is undeniably compelling, and the film has heart, which explains its importance. However, it's not enough to make it memorable. And I won't even mention the rushed issue of Jesus's face.

I stopped watching this movie when the main

I stopped watching this movie when the main character tried to insult his male friends by calling them "Ladies." It's painful to have your gender used as an insult.
