Plot summary
Many times during his presidency, Lyndon B. Johnson said that ultimate victory in the Vietnam War depended upon the U.S. military winning the "hearts and minds" of the Vietnamese people. Filmmaker Peter Davis uses Johnson's phrase in an ironic context in this anti-war documentary, filmed and released while the Vietnam War was still under way, juxtaposing interviews with military figures like U.S. Army Chief of Staff William C. Westmoreland with shocking scenes of violence and brutality.

If you read history it says that France colonized Vietnam in the Napoleonic era, for rice, rubber and minerals. Like any other country being colonized they were basically treated as slaves. Ho Chi Minh wanted something better for his people in the early 20th century, he travelled to France, US, and Britain and saw that people were actually living better than his own. We he didn't receive any support, he went to the communist China, where they had plenty of experience fighting in guerilla warfare due to it's own civil war and Japan in ww2. After Vietnam were trained by the chinese they used to tactics to fight the French, in which due to international policies US had to get involved because they were allies in the american revolution and in ww2. But not only that at that time it was during the cold war and the fear of the domino effect that if one nation turned to comunism others would too. The US saw multiple countries falling to comunism like in Central America, South America, African Continent, China, and now Vietnam. So to control the spread they got involved thinking they were powerful enough to stop it but unware of the highly trained Viet cong and North vietnamese army in guerilla warfare and not educating themselves in getting to know the land prior. That is what happened.
To Stinky Barbie, get your facts right, the US did not aid the French in any way whatsoever. The US had to meddle in other country's business, again. The US never won the Vietnam war either. Politics, politics. The US did not want to enter in WWII but were very willing to go to Vietnam, some research for you. Entertain yourself with some research and real facts.
the Synopsis makes a factual error, the US didn't create the conflict, they came to the aid of the French. when the French cut and ran communist apologists tried to fill the political power vacuum. the US had that conflict won several times but each time political entities decided otherwise.

Actually Marc101 the USA paid for more than half the French military effort in Vietnam. It lost interest when France asked for nukes before Dien Ben Phu.
