Simmering comedy, but the heist caper behind it

Simmering comedy, but the heist caper behind it is worthwhile.

I love this movie. I've read all the bad reviews, even James Caan's disparaging comments about it, and I can't agree. Yes, it's silly - but that's the point! It's slapstick in the old sense. The story is compelling, Diane Keaton's earnestness is a ridiculous contrast, and Michael Caine's wry performance provides an anchor to James Caan and Elliot Gould's playful, over-the-top mugging. The period costumes and sets are delicious, and Caan and Gould are adorable together, with some of the best buddy-movie chemistry I've ever seen. Don't expect 'Citizen Kane,' just enjoy the movie.

Michael Caine, Elliot Gould, James Caan, and Diane

Michael Caine, Elliot Gould, James Caan, and Diane Keaton Two conmen, Walter & Harry in the early 19th century are down on their luck with their entertainment act But they want to go all out with the biggest heist So they put their faith in the biggest safecracker, Adam Worth in the world along with a crusading newspaper woman, Lissa She wants to steer them in a new direction of their lives and out of the harsh prison sentence They're tasked with targeting the biggest most secure back in Lowell, Massachusetts It's kinda funny everyone is on board with these two conmen and their skilled robbing tactics The heist is the only cool portion of the movie where everything else before is kinda stagnating It's a bit heavy handed and the direction and tone are muted in many spots but Keaton gives a fiery performance and it's well photographed Gould and Caan make for a fun, likable duo too
