This is another one of the worst movies

This is another one of the worst movies I actually paid to see and sat through all the way. To start with to me it seems to be a good candidate for the winner in the Paul Newman phones it in department and boy does he ever. And yes I know he paid money to a newspaper for an ad to apologize for his "The Silver Chalice" performance but this one is so one dimensional I find it far stinkier. The script apparently demands he chew gum throughout and besides being annoying it is not remotely funny or needed because his zombie going through the motions act is stiff and forced throughout. The supporting cast of many brilliant character actors are wasted on one dimensional roles nobody could breathe any life into and it all seems like a third rate made for t.v. flick. Shelley Winters gets something going for a few minutes but it is lost in the avalanche of cliches and absolutely no surprises at all plotting. Poor Julie Harris is thrown away in a pathetic turn as a jazz singing junkie.

Ok, watching for the 1st time in 2025

Ok, watching for the 1st time in 2025. It's ok. The story is a bit convoluted and the motives of the bad people in the movie are going to make you wanna do some eye rolls, lol. The dialogue, given how old it is= is actually pretty good. It's hard to not love Newman in pretty much Anything. I do have some oldies in my collection but I don't think this is gonna be a keeper. Even had I seen it when it came out- I would've thought the same. It's totally worth watching, I just don't think it's probably worth keeping.

A Crime Thriller Classic. The acting is really good across the board but this film starts and ends with its leading man. Paul Newman shows why he was one of the leading men of the 60's. He is excellent in the role and the best thing here. Great dialouge and an absolutely loaded/stacked supporting cast. The villians are solid too. Really good cinematography. It's colorful, well directed, has some great locations, and really oozes 60's in the way a film like To Live & Die in LA embraces the 80's. It's somewhat bloated storywise with a lot going on fitting in it's all star cast. It never keeps them all together but stays focused on Newman. It can be difficult keeping up with all the different subplots but to it's credit it's pretty clever got good twists and turns and that add up well, and keeps you guessing the entire time. It's cynical and also has a good amount of humor to it also that gives it charm too. It's like a very early Neo Noir mixed with 70's crime drmaa elements and it works really well overall. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, crime thrillers/Neo Noirs should check this out.
