A prince seeks revenge based on the testimony

A prince seeks revenge based on the testimony of a ghost. After an amazing introduction in which Ian McKellan laments a world that has allowed theatre to die, the play we all know begins. I'll always love McKellan but I couldn't get past the age and sex blindness. The veteran actor can't give a bad performance but he's playing a character younger than his mother but he's older? And making Laertes and Hamlet's father women? It made no sense. I was unable to immerse myself.

I'm sitting here still watching this god awful

I'm sitting here still watching this god awful film, if not for the fact that I'm here with my classmates as a school trip i would probably walk out after the first hour. The cast, no matter how well they act, is ABSOLJTELLY awfull. Main character looks like an 80 yo and ophelia like a 20 yo. The actor playing the main character is older than the one playing his MOTHER. The modern setting doesnt help at all, it is dissapointing and makes the story all the more confuzing and not worth watching. I mean, it just makes it seem less real. Its espetially upsetting beacause I liked the original play. However, his version is boring enough that our teacher walked out abt 20 min. ago to"go grab sth to eat" and aproximately half the room is sleaping or at least dosing off (like 5 classes). Would never recomend, the medieval times logics just dont make sense with the modern settings, the language and story line doesnt match for example Hamlet working out on an electrical bike sort of thing. The diction is nice tho, so props to the actors for that.

A fresh & interesting interpretation of the Shakespeare (actually Marlow) classic

The 'hook' of the latest big-screen version of the play "Hamlet" (which like all other 'Shakespeare' works was btw actually written by Christopher Marlowe) is that it's set around various rooms, passages, etc in an old theatre - rather than in Denmark or even on stage... oh, and Ian McKellen (superb actor but 85yrs old) plays the titular young Danish prince driven to madness by grief, anger, & frustration at himself after his uncle Jonathan Hyde kills his father and marries his mum Jenny Seagrove. The likes of Frances Barber support, but the 'star' is director Sean Mathias for his fresh interpretation. It's still 'Shakespeare' (Marlowe), so not for all, but with an interesting new tone.
