Plot summary

Amidst putting together a benefit concert for the local farmers and on the brink of a huge deal with mogul Lucky Claybert, Gumby and his band The Clayboys must battle with the villainous Blockheads, who have kidnapped their loyal canine Lowbelly.

Doing little to serve as a good first

Doing little to serve as a good first impression for newcomers and not feeling grand enough to warrant being the titular claymation icon's first, and only, cinematic feature, I was completely let down by "Gumby 1". Very slow-paced, having a disjointed story that comes off as little more than an excuse to focus on visuals referencing the likes of Star Wars, suffering from robotic voice-acting (ironic considering that the film deals with robo-impostors) and primitive, albeit charming, animation that has the misfortune of coming after Wallace & Gromit and Nightmare Before Christmas. I did like some things: the aforementioned claymation has its moments, the "hospital bill" line was actually pretty funny and the end credits song is really catchy. I guess if you're stoned, this could be a much more fun, surreal experience but I'm telling you, this ain't no underrated animation classic. No real stakes or meaningful narrative make it easy to see why "Gumby 2" never materialised.
