This little diamond from Taiwan inaugurated the new wave cinema of the country in the 1980s (No, it's not a 2011 movie Rotten Tomatoes! Get your database straight!). In our time is an omnibus film consisting of 4 parts. All of them deal with life in modern Taiwan. All directors focuses on a young genereration which are striving with school, love, standing-out, work. There was a lyricism in all of the stories and a bittersweet taste of humour accompanied by slow American music or piano sonats which accentuated the melancholy of the everyday life in Taiwan. I must admit that I am not aware of the cinema of Taiwan before the new wave but I assume, as all national cinemas, it must have been around war, heroes, history, adventure and kung-fu . With the introduction of the new wave by directors such as Hou Hsiao hsien taiwanese cinema reached a maturity by focusing its lens on real people, and familiar daily thematics.

Not Just Edward Yang's Segment, Other shorts are also equally great.

The first segemt portrays an innocent childhood, the second a curious and confused adolescent, the third a charming college student and fourth athe everyday struggles of a new relationship. They are all very funny especially the last segment and brings a great smile on your face. Definitely a must match for edward yang and new Taiwanese cinema fans which will give you a lasting memory of happiness even after seeing it a long time ago.
