'Do you know what date that is? Two wonderful things happen on that day: the yogurt goes bad and it's my birthday.' Yeah, yeah, German film and its stilted dialogue. Fortunately, I barely understood anything else that was said in "Grand Jeté" – #germanmumblecore. But that wasn't necessary, because you can basically follow Isabelle Stever's Oedipal drama perfectly well without dialogue. This is thanks to the courageous and thoughtful acting of Sarah Grether and Emil von Schönfels, as well as the truly excellent direction, which, as a viewer of the film, created some very unpleasant voyeuristic situations with its extremely subjective camerawork. "Grand Jeté" is definitely not a film you want to watch with your parents or on a first date; it's about battered bodies and souls, loneliness, and the search for love without having any idea what that even is. The Berlin depicted takes place almost exclusively in reflections; mother and son seem to be moving through their own hell, and perhaps that's precisely why they are meant for each other? To put it briefly: a fascinating, somewhat long-winded, extremely unpleasant film that demands a lot from its actors and the audience.

Majestic film, but definately a problematic watch. The selfishness of Nadja is bewildering by normal standards of morality, but Sarah Nevads Grather carries it off with great aplomb. The sex scenes are quite amazing, although deeply disturbing. One particularly nasty scene involves Hanna, the grandmother, as she unexpectedly reveals her own incestuous bent. Hard and challenging movie, but sincerely done.
