"Goodbye & Amen" is an Italian movie which did what many Italian films did in the 1950s to about 1980...it cast a few Americans in leading roles in order to try to gain traction abroad. Fellini did this with films like "La Strada" and so did Visconti with films like "The Leopard"...and, of course the 'Spaghetti Westerns' of the 1960s-70s were all about casting foreigners (often but not always Americans) in the leads. Unlike many, the version I saw was in Italian and even American actors like Tony Musante and John Forsythe were dubbed into Italian. I'm pretty sure that there's an English dub out there somewhere. I did find a German dub of this film! The plot to this one is strange. While the movie starts off with a group of men planning some sort of coup d'etat, soon the story changes dramatically when a gunman in a highrise hotel shoots a couple people. He later takes a couple hostage...which is REALLY awkward for the woman (Claudia Cardinale) as the man she is with is NOT her husband but her lover! How do the two disparate plots relate and what's next? And, who are these plotters? See the film to learn the rest. This is a good film in many ways...taut and exciting. However, I also think the film really gets Americans all wrong in the story. Like the Italians, the Americans often talk VERY intensely and quickly...sounding rather like they're really angry. Well, this isn't how Americans sound...though perhaps we do sound that way to Italians. In general, we are a loud people...but not at all in situations like this. Too often, folks yell...and I was also surprised when the Italian woman was taken prisoner...as she screamed and screamed at the killer...which likely could have gotten her killed. Perhaps Italian women are this fiery...I certainly don't know. But the Americans were sometimes just dubbed too intensely to see realistic.By the way, be aware that there is some full frontal male nudity in this one. It's not exactly salacious...but some might want to be aware of this.
