Plot summary

Fleeing a distressing family situation, Eiko, a very young girl, becomes an apprentice to Miyoharu, a veteran geisha. Both, determined to preserve their professional integrity, must face the selfishness and ambition of several petty people.

NYT 1000 movies list. Unique for taking on the hidden culture and showing the real people behind it. It was sad, but it hasn't especially stood the test of time. Saw on youtube.

Not as engaging as Mizoguchi's masterworks and certainly

Not as engaging as Mizoguchi's masterworks and certainly a step back from the cinematic Ugetsu Monogatari but a decent social critique on changing attitudes towards women in post-war Japan nonetheless with the director on relentless, scathing form.
