Plot summary

It is 300 years into the future. Earth's environment had been devastated by mankind's own foolish plans and humankind is beleaguered by the sentient forests which they have awoken. The world balance is tipped when a young boy named Agito stumbles across a machine that glowed in a strange blue hue inside a forbidden sanctuary.

In a post ecocide caused by modified trees

In a post ecocide caused by modified trees, a young boy awakens a girl who has been asleep for centuries. Together they must prevent humans and the trees coming into conflict. Visually stunning, this blatant nod to some Miyazaki films sets up some sophisticated world building but eventually devolves into a formulaic tale in its last hour with a "save the princess" action chase for good measure. It features 3D modeling within 2D animation, which usually irritates me but I found the images tolerable. There are some lush environments showcased. Just wish it had the heart Miyazaki's works do.

It is an excellent movie that despite being a bit longer than it should is masterfully animated, has exceptional sound and music, and is worth seeing for its positive environmental message alone. It is no Nausicaä, but it is a wonderful effort that is most definitely worth watching.

I thought Origin: Spirits of the Past was

I thought Origin: Spirits of the Past was a pretty enjoyable Anime film. As far as environmental Anime features go, it's definitely not as strong as Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa and Mononoke, but with some creative visuals, nice music, good chemistry between the two leads, cool scenes with Agito showing his forest powers and an awesome opening sequence, I definitely recommend this one.
