Plot summary

Ulrich Mott is an eccentric and versatile social climber with grandiose plans to affect United States foreign policy. Encouraged in his attempts by his strategically chosen (and much older) wife, the well-connected journalist Elsa Brecht, Mott has a knack for making himself indispensable and impossible to ignore. The only one seemingly immune to his charms is Elsa's daughter Amanda, who might simply disapprove of her mother marrying a much younger man - or perhaps she senses something more sinister beneath the smooth-talking surface?

I lived in Nebraska and working long hours

I lived in Nebraska and working long hours when the actual events transpired and apparently never heard of this story until today. The opening scene of the movie feels utterly fake and in a way it is ingenious because the story is about a deception in the nth degree. Other than the daughter played by Benning, all other characters demonstrate various human weaknesses. The protagonist is a decorated brigadier general of the Iraqi army, a proud graduate of the Walter Mitty branch in West Point. He marries a much older socialite journalist who despite recognizing his flaws, ultimately finds him preferable to solitude and pays a heavy price. No major flaws in acting or photography.

Loved this movie. Hard to not like Waltz's

Loved this movie. Hard to not like Waltz's characters, even if they are negative, as he brings charm and charisma to the roles. He acted well in this movie. A mix of thriller and drama. It was also directed really well, by him. The pacing was smooth, and led to a dramatic finish.

It starts off a bit boring, but soon drags one into the dark and strange story of this sleazebag, climbing up ranks of imaginary fame and fortune. Unfortunately there are people like that all across the globe, charming themselves into ever higher positions of influence. Some wreaking havoc in the process, other cheating millions, even billions out of unsuspecting victims. All gaining what they should not have. Christoph Waltz's and Vanessa Redgrave's performances are impeccable and really bring this story to life. True or not! 6 1/2 out of 10 points.
