Plot summary

Recovering from a broken heart is never easy. Gala, has been dating Bara for eight years, and wants to marry him soon. Suddenly Bara broke off their relationship. Gala is devastated and is struggling to heal her broken heart. Fortunately, she meets Aiman and he accompanies Gala and help her recover. Gala begins to fall in love, but slowly realizes that Aiman is the same as Bara. Aiman is not the cure for her broken heart. Will she heal her broken heart? Or will her heart breaks even more?

Smart premise, overly formulaic execution

Odd Even (Ganjil Genap) is an Indonesian romantic comedy film that presents a unique and highly relatable premise for urban audiences: using Jakarta's traffic rules as a metaphor for finding a soulmate. The film centres on a woman who, after a breakup, suddenly has to face the reality that she needs a new "partner" for her daily mobility.I give this film a rating of 6/10. It is a decent film that is enjoyable as light entertainment, but feels too safe and clichéd to be memorable.Why a 6/10 rating?Clever and Relevant Premise: The number 6 is given for its very clever premise. The idea is fresh, funny, and very specific to the reality of Jakarta, providing a strong foundation for a rom-com.Light and Entertaining Viewing: The film succeeds at being what it is: light viewing. Supported by bright visuals, fairly good chemistry between the main cast, and appropriate humour, the film is easy to enjoy.However, the film cannot score higher due to its very formulaic execution. After its unique premise is presented at the beginning, the plot unfolds exactly like the standard rom-coms we've seen many times before. The conflict is predictable, and the resolution feels too neat and clichéd. The unique potential of the "Odd-Even" rule feels under-explored and serves more as a plot device than the actual core of the conflict.
