Clowns are one of my areas of special interest, and I've been studying them for years. So, I'm very, and I mean VERY, picky about clowns in movies. I'm saying that so you understand where I'm coming from when I say I hit "play" assuming I'd find this clown to be just some guy in paint and not really someone with clown training. Boy was I wrong! I mean, the UK understands clowns, they've had them for years and the inventor of modern clowning was from London. "Funnyman", who is clearly Mr Punch, is absolutely perfect. Modern clowns in America, even scary ones, tend to be too sanitized to feel "right". Not so with this film, which preserves the vulgarity, sexuality, and what I always refer to as "fleshiness". He's delightful and the whole film feels like a Harlequinade. Half a star removed bc I'm pretty sure the black character is a racist stereotype? Only thing wrong with this film.

I'm certain that the deeply ingrained elements of British culture and humour within Funny Man's DNA are sure to sour most who live outside my home country; because outside of these sensibilities, this little 90-minute gem has practically no plot to its antics, just sequences of surreal dupes in and around the ancestral home of Christopher Lee, plenty of disturbing violence and a wise-cracking fourth wall-breaking demonic jester at its core. Originally conceived as straight horror, the film shifted more radically into comedy after a series of highly relaxed inspirations between its cast and crew, if anything the film's comedic elements help to make the violence more unsettling. The Nightmare on Elm Street meets Scooby-Doo aesthetics are by no means perfect, it's cheaply done and makes no apologies, but therein lies its considerable charm. Director Simon Sprackling's determination to keep us on our toes means that the nuclear family that opens the film are soon wiped out and replaced with Mystery Inc. sans Scooby updated for the '90s. A stroke of mad genius that sees Daphne turned into a Jamaican witch doctor, Fred a little more jaded than usual, Shaggy being exactly the same as he always is and Velma being handed the shitty end of the stick. Sense is not what this film is about, it's all about the central performance from Tim James as the titular character and boy, is it a corker. When you call a film Funny Man you have to deliver the lines, and this film does with a slice of first-class entertainment, a work of minor genius one that's probably even more effective if the viewer is in the same state of mind as the crew who made it... off their rocker!
