Plot summary

Based on the play by August Strindberg, Miss Julie vividly depicts the battle of the sexes and classes that ensues when Julie, a wealthy businessman's daughter, falls for Jean, her father's bitter servant.

A somewhat neglected high point in early 50's

A somewhat neglected high point in early 50's European cinema, 'Froken Julie' has some of the finest flashback sequences ever put on film and I suspect that these were a big influence on John Sayles's 'Lone Star', made 50 years later in a very similar style. The cinematography is very typically Swedish, shot in high contrast with lots of natural lighting but also with some beautiful Welles-ian setpieces where the camera weaves dramatically in and around the actors, and lots of deep-focus shots. Swedish cinema is best known perhaps for Ingmar Bergman but this is a bravura melodrama predating his work that is highly unique and well worth investigating. It features Max Von Sydow in a minor, early role and also won the Palme d'Or in '51.
