Plot summary

Young babysitter Amanda arrives at the Lloyd residence to spend the evening looking after their young son. Soon after the Lloyds leave, a series of frightening occurrences in the gloomy old house have Amanda's nerves on edge. The real terror begins, however, when the child's biological father appears after recently escaping from a nearby mental institution.

The first at it's subgenre. Genuinely scary, thrilling and suspensul with a very quirky and innovative directing that might feel too much for some.

In Fright, an early entry in the ‘pretty

In Fright, an early entry in the ‘pretty babysitter terrorized by unhinged madman’ sub-genre of horror movies, Susan George plays Amanda, a pretty babysitter terrorized by…well…an unhinged madman (Ian Bannen). The setting is appropriately spooky, the lighting is effective, and George is great in the lead role (along with Straw Dogs, ’71 was a pretty good year for her, but it was mostly downhill from there, sadly). On the flip side, there are a lot of low-angle shots that seem pointless, the flashy editing is nuts at times, and the final act feels like it takes forever to play itself out. All in all, as long as expectations aren’t too high, Fright isn’t a bad way to spend ninety minutes.

The lead, Susan George, carries this flick. Authentic expressions, believable speech. Her lines too, very well written, especially when you consider a man wrote them. Also superb how she transitions gradually and calmly as she realizes about halfway through that the second man of the night she let in isn't just a neighbor, as he claimed. The other actors are average. Except the villain, whose performance is slightly below average. The writing is very good, with one major exception. Toward the end, when we see a certain man (won't say whom) get cut by...um, someone, he barely reacts! Much verisimilitude gets lost there. Our writer should've known that in reality when one gets cut even a bit--never mind deeply--the cut person screams and freaks out! If not for that screwup I would've given this movie an extra half star. However, soon after, the great climax scene almost makes us forget the recent screwup. Solidifying this fine flick as four out of five shiny stars.
