Plot summary

In his delirium from his return from war, Francesco Bernardone goes back in his memories to the days when he lived for parties and carnal pleasures. He slowly recovers, but after the illness he is no longer the Francesco that everybody knew. Instead of spending hours in taverns, he meditates on the beauty of God's creatures, soon renouncing his riches and his family with plans to rebuild an abandoned church and his life.

This film is loosely based on the life

This film is loosely based on the life of St. Francis of Assisi, a troubadour for Jesus Christ and founder of a religious order. It is best received as a tale of holy innocence in the face of religious corruption and of selfless service to those in terrible need.

Both halves of the film, though different, cohere

Both halves of the film, though different, cohere beautifully. The first half shows the father's materialism, while the second half embraces the values of the simple life. The first half is engaging and never boring, with Zeffirelli's artistic stamp evident throughout. The second half flourishes with the simple life, as Francis and his followers build a community based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. The film's production quality is excellent, with impressive production design and art direction. The simple folk songs on the soundtrack, sung by Donovan, fit well with the material. Overall, the film is well done, with meaningful and substantial themes that should stir one's faith. "Brother Sun, Sister Moon," a 1972 British-Italian coproduction, was nominated for technical awards at major ceremonies, including costumes and art direction. However, the film, about the life of St. Francis of Assisi, deserves more recognition.
