Plot summary

The life of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) as related by followers who gather after his death to tell stories so that Leone can record them: a privileged and virile youth, a prisoner of war, an heir who turns away from his father and gives all to the poor, a beggar for others, and an inspiration to friends who accept the Gospels' life of poverty.

Although the sets were realistic and well-done, attempting

Although the sets were realistic and well-done, attempting to watch this movie was a waste of time and in fact, I did stop watching it. I've seen at least 2 other movies about the life of St. Francis of Assisi which, although not great-- were far superior to this one. For one thing the audience has no clue about the moment of St. Francis' spiritual awakening as this is not delineated or made clear in the movie. Are we to believe that by reading a small book of the Gospels while a prisoner in Perugia that St. Francis suddenly wanted to change his life? Neither is there any mention of the voice emanating from the crucifix in the abandoned wayside chapel where St. Francis had fallen asleep one night----which was the voice of Jesus instructing St. Francis to 'rebuild my church'. The dialogue was sparce, choppy and unconvincing and there was little to no continuity in the scenes. I became so disconcerted watching the movie that I had to stop watching it altogether. Would not recommend anyone waste their time attempting to glean any insights into the life and conversion of one of Catholicism's most popular and famous saints by watching this movie. It's not worth it!

I watched this film on curiosity after reading

I watched this film on curiosity after reading Kazantzakis' St. Francis, not Hesse. The sound and production are somewhat dated but the performance and message were surprisingly compelling. Rourke, perhaps cast oddly at the time, appears genuine and moving in this role. The same can be said for Helena Bonham Carter, who held a similar fascination. The script could have been developed further which is the only drawback. If you are seeking a moving drama on the life of Francis, this one is worthy and filled with reflective fascinations due to the cast and production.
