Plot summary

In 1838, lovely governess Elisabeth Laurier agrees to bear a child of an anonymous English landowner, and he will in return pay her father's debt. At birth, she, as agreed, gives up the child. Seven years later, she is hired as governess to a girl on a remote Sussex estate. The girl's father, Charles Godwin, turns out to be that anonymous landowner. So Elisabeth has to be her own daughter's governess, and she can't reveal the secret of her tie with little Louisa.

I watched this movie many years ago and

I watched this movie many years ago and still remember most of it. Beautifully filmed and romantic. I think women would appreciate it more than men. One of my all-time favorite movies.

I love this hidden gem, I found it

I love this hidden gem, I found it by accident years ago on TV and its stayed with me ever since. I don't care what the critics say, its a beautiful little story, wonderfully acted with exceptional music.

Unclear why this has been savaged by the critics. Like a 19th century romantic novel it describes a relationship that starts as a monetary exchange. That period’s surrogate motherhood develops into a real love story that eventually overcomes the different obstacles. Far from flawless ethically, the film ends with the promise that the protagonists will have better days. Very well photographed and acted, no wonder why it is approved by the viewers. On Prime.
