Far away it seems, but also little too close are the memories of many of us during the Covid pandemic, the lockdowns and the new normal version of the world in the early 2020's. It seemed that the world had stopped, many lives were missed and what kind of hope for the future one could possibly think in the times to come, if they'd come."Fin qui tutto bene?" ("Up to Here, Is Everything Good?") is among one of those memories of that period, a real story that could be the one from someone you knew or probably heard happening in the news. It's a fine movie about the topic, despite some peculiar dramatic devices used that affect the reality of it all. But I wonder if audiences will be drawn to it due to its time proximity, memories are too fresh and there are many things we want to forget about the world period. I suspect that future audiences will see it in a different light and one thing is certain: they'll get an accurate view of life during Covid.The film follows the young Matteo (Francesco Isasca), a visual arts/photography student whose life falls apart when his mother commits suicide during the early days of the lockdown. Here's where the story takes some of its strongest notes, with the memories of how many of us were affected by news and media, and the world wasn't just getting sick by a new virus. Even strong hearts and minds were starting to feel ill with the reality around them.In between the social distancing and its aftermath, Matteo sees life in a different and helpless way, living with his old father (Maurizio Mattioli); unsure if he'll continue with his arts course and torn apart about a new love relationship that comes his life. He's too immersed in his grief when awake; and nightmares become a recurring issue when he's asleep (the major disruptive device was this use of dreams, turning the bittersweet, lighthearted and melancholic movie into a small horror movie).I don't know how director/writer Cosimo Bosco managed to mix some many genres into one film and succeeding it in a nice way. There's comedy, romance, quiet and heavy drama, some thrills, some humor and bits of horror. The film reflect a great deal of many different moods and feelings that we've been through, and it's not a case of insanity (just a little close).It was strangely hard to keep a consistent mood in daily activities or spending time consuming what was on screens or other distractions. Watching it was a powerful rollercoaster of emotions, quite painful one, and also slighly nostalgic.As you watch Matteo's story is almost impossible to not recollect the memories and the thoughts of who you were back in the day, what you felt then and the changes or lessons that came from all of that time. I think the greatest asset of a film like this was to make us pause from our current reality, look back to all of those dark and sad moments we went through, to reassess about the things we want and need, plans and dreams to leave aside or new ones to build. Movies as a needed and planned pause that can make us see things in a clearer way, as opposed to that forced pause during Covid era that didn't allow for better thinking and better actions.I wasn't familiar with any of the names involved with the film, but I greatly enjoyed their work (notably the leading man for his blend of comedy and drama; and Simone Moretto playing the demanding college professor). Certainly one of the finest surprises I ever encountered in the world of movies. 8/10.
