Plot summary

6-year-old Johan (nicknamed 'Fimpen') loves football. One day, his talents are discovered, and it doesn't take long before Fimpen gets to travel around with the national team. Fimpen becomes an idol and the media wants a piece of him all the time. It gets hard to catch up in school.

Tom Thumb as a secret weapon.

Bo Widerberg seemed to like the outcasts , ,the intruders ,notably in "Fimpen " , a football champion child who has to renege on his career for he cannot write; "Joe Hill" released two years after Joan Baez's song in the Woodstock festival, the life of a working class activist ; in "Elvira Madigan" , he depicts the love story of a tightrope walker , the icon of a circus, and of a deserter .(like "Hill",based on a true story.)"Fimpen " must be looked upon as a fable ; Bo Widerberg's movie is a plea for education, for school, which must not be sacrificed for the sake of sport (or showbusiness) ; the sequences of the growing kittens litter is revealing .There's a time for everything .The young hero can't play football with boys his age for he's too good at the game ; he needs to be told a fairy tale before going to sleep (and it's his big team mates who fall asleep );at school ,his arithmetic is poor :a child will be a child.

Trifle from Widerberg, but a good one

One of Bo Widerberg's lesser known works.The story about the six year old Fimpen who get to play with the national team of Sweden (who appear as themselves) is really charming.The scene when the team with Ralf Edström, Ronnie Hellström and others complaining to coach "Åby". About reading the bedtime story 14 Little Bears over and over again to Fimpen is really funny.So is Carl Billquist as the little too enthusiastic principal.Unfortunately the sound quality is rather poor and I wonder if that might be the reason why it hasn't been shown very much?Still, this is a good children's film that not only children are going to find amusing.
